BDD070614_TP079 P.TOHIER/PHOTOMOBILE These images taken in Vergèze (30) and Briscous (64) will make you (perhaps) discover or rediscover this very special atmosphere that reigns within the RockaBilly festivals.
They are bitten, passionate, they don't listen to Rock'N Roll, they live it. Everything goes there: music, clothes, car, decoration, tattoo… they have Billy in their skin! How ? …Billy in the skin? but by the way… who is Billy ??? This question from a "non-initiated" asked during the Greasy Days festival (Briscous) made us laugh a lot.
“Hey how? that what who? ha ok… well uh… Billy how to say? It's nobody and a bit everyone at the same time, well, it's not Billy's Rock! It's Billy's Rock, you see?...or...don't you see? »
Rockabilly is simply rock'n'roll in its original version from the beginning of the 50s: guitar, double bass, drums. The term is a portmanteau between rock and hillbilly. The lyrics often refer to recurring themes of 1950s American popular culture, such as the automobile or romantic relationships. Its followers can still be recognized today by their typical clothing style: slicked back hairstyles, jeans and leather jackets, bowling shirts for boys. Dresses with petticoats, scarves and raised hairstyles for the pin-ups.
This subculture develops in a context of the end of the war where young people are emancipated, which also involves the automobile with the birth of hot-rodding: they embellished their cars to improve their power (remember the scene of the race in La fureur de Vivre).
Some musical and cinematographic references from these enthusiasts: Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly...American Graffiti, Cry baby, La bamba, Great Balls of Fire...
PS: A big thank you to Dominique B and Eric L and Isabelle for their kindness and sharing their common passion, long live Rock'N'Roll!
